Background of the Study
Digital code‑switching—alternating between languages in communication—is a well-documented phenomenon in Nigeria. On WhatsApp, the immediacy and intimacy of conversations foster frequent code‑switching among speakers, while Facebook’s public forum encourages strategic language alternation to suit diverse audiences. This study evaluates how Nigerian users employ code‑switching across WhatsApp and Facebook, exploring the linguistic, social, and technological factors that drive this behavior (Uzo, 2023). It examines how code‑switching serves as a tool for identity negotiation, social inclusion, and expressive creativity in digital communication. By comparing the frequency and contexts of language alternation on these two platforms, the research sheds light on how digital environments influence bilingual practices and shape online discourse. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how technological affordances interact with cultural practices to generate dynamic linguistic behavior in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although code‑switching is prevalent in Nigerian social media, comparative studies that examine its manifestation on both WhatsApp and Facebook are limited. Existing research often focuses on one platform, leaving a gap in understanding how different digital environments influence language alternation. This deficiency hampers our ability to develop comprehensive models of bilingual digital communication. The current study aims to fill this gap by analyzing and comparing code‑switching patterns on WhatsApp and Facebook, thereby uncovering the mechanisms through which platform-specific features affect language use (Chukwu, 2023).
